Since 2000, the N.S.R.A. has been a private licensing and sanctioning body for racers at the Ukiah Speedway, owned and managed by the Ukiah Speedway management. Over time, management and the N.S.R.A. members have come to realize that the arenas and depth of expertise required to run both a speedway and a racing association is more than can be expected of a single person.
Management has been asked by the N.S.R.A. members, and advised by other racing organizations, to create an independent Board of Directors to manage, preside over, and mediate with the N.S.R.A. membership, and to advise and assist the speedway management.
In December of 2009, the Ukiah Speedway management took action and invited nine individuals to become the charter members of the N.S.R.A. Board of Directors. Each was chosen based on their racing and professional experience, and their history with Northern California racing and racers.
Curtis Clauson was invited to create the Board, write the Bylaws, and become the charter Chair because of his 30+ year history with associations and non-profit organizations, their Boards, and management. The Chair will run the Board and their meetings.
Gary DeRosier will serve as charter President. The President will preside over and represent the membership.
Jinjer Hearn will serve as a charter Director and as the Secretary. The Secretary does not have to be a Director since the position entails a specific skill set.
The remaining charter Directors are: Manya Tenney, Kevin Barba, Berndt Akerstrom, Chuck Sabol, Paul Lauenroth, and Davey Coyne.
Communication of Board actions and policies can be provided by letters to the membership (like this), but will mostly be provided by the Board website at "http://www.NorthStateRacingAssociation.org", where you will find the Constitution and Bylaws of the NSRA, minutes for each Board meeting posted within a week of the last meeting, and the tentative agenda for the next meeting posted at least a week before. The last minutes and current agenda will also be posted at the Board meetings for anyone to review. Since there is no need for a formal vote by the membership, a General Meeting is not normally required but can be called for by the Board or through a well-supported membership petition.
Please see the website for a more detailed description of the governing model that was chosen for the NSRA, the election process, and the influence you, as the constituent membership, have over the Board and management.
Class representatives are expected to be actively involved in their class and will report at each Board meeting. Nominations for class representatives are now being gathered from the membership.
We, your NSRA Board of Directors, look forward to supporting racing and the racing community, and fostering its growth. We ask that you, the membership, help each other understand your influence in this association, and to use your voice to guide your Board and the management.
Our initial tasks are the promotion of the Ukiah Speedway to the local community and businesses, and to find and list resources to help our racers. We offer some of the most effective advertising in terms of positive and effective exposure per hour, and hope to impress upon the business community how much we can help them. We ask the membership to please help spread the word.
Please refer to the website at "http://www.NorthStateRacingAssociation.org" for updates, and voice your opinions and concerns with your President Gary DeRosier or any other Director. Contact forms will be made available soon on the website. The membership and the public are always welcome at the NSRA Board meetings held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7pm in the Yokayo Bowling Center Spare Room Lounge.
Curtis Clauson
Chair of the NSRA Board of Directors
by Curtis Clauson
Ukiah CA, 2010-01-13 - Last Tuesday night 2010 January 12 in the Ukiah Yokayo Bowling Center Spare Room Lounge, the Ukiah Speedway management met with nine prominent figures in the racing community to form the North State Racing Association Board of Directors.
The NSRA is the association that sanctions and licenses racers and racing for the Ukiah Speedway. The speedway management team and the NSRA membership requested the formation of a Board of Directors to help deal with the fast and complex changes occurring due to the economy and the evolution of racing.
There are a great number of arenas involved with racing these days: track management and maintenance, running the show, competitive and fair rules for all the different classes, promotion, managing the racers, racing community, fans, advertisers, and involved local businesses, and mediating issues between all of them.
The NSRA Board of Directors brings to these arenas the breadth and depth of experience and skills of nine long-time veterans of racing and business. The charter Directors are: Manya Tenney, Kevin Barba, Berndt Akerstrom, Paul Lauenroth, Chuck Sabol, and Davey Coyne. Jinjer Hearn, who has served in the Northern California Racing Association (NCRA) as Secretary for more than 10 years, is also the NSRA Secretary. Gary DeRosier, who is from a family of racers and well connected with the racing community, is the President. Curtis Clauson, who has run and dealt with associations and entertainment venues for more than 30 years, is the Board Chair.
The Mission Statement of the NSRA Board is: "The North State Racing Association (N.S.R.A.) represents the interests of the membership, the racing community at large, and the fans, surrounding community, and businesses with an interest in racing. We will manage and mediate the policies and issues of the racing community, and connect them with any resources and materials they need. We will oversee the evolution of racing and promote policies that enable racers to compete and encourage fair competition. We will promote racing and racers to the business and public community, and help provide an entertaining venue for the fans and participants."
After the Board was created and adopted their bylaws, they immediately got to work on promotional ideas, the current issues of the NSRA membership, improving the relationship between Ukiah Speedway and the Ukiah business community, and preparing for the 2010 racing season.
The NSRA Board of Directors meeting will be held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7pm in the Ukiah Yokayo Bowling Center Lounge. The meeting is open to racers and the public and all are invited to attend and participate.
